Laila Subratti Artist: Capturing the World in Texture, Colour, and Shape
Laila Subratti is a British surrealist and abstract expressionist artist known for her unique ability to capture the world around us through texture, colour, and shape. Her approach to painting masterfully merges reality and fantasy, evoking feelings of nostalgia, sanctuary, and escapism. Of Mauritian descent, Laila draws inspiration from her rich heritage and global travels which shine through her signature collection, “A Sanctuary Through a Lens.” This collection beautifully captures the allure of various countries, particularly Mauritius, presenting nature’s beauty as if viewed through a lens. “I want people to feel a sense of escapism from my paintings, transporting them back to a memory or a place in time.”

About Laila
My Story: Early Life and Influences
Laila was born in North London, to Mauritian parents. Her passion for art was evident from a young age. At just six years old, while attending a school in North London, her talent was recognised by her form teacher. She played a pivotal role in Laila’s artistic journey, enlisting her help with school displays and nurturing her budding talent. “She always said that one day I would grow up to be an artist. Those words stayed with me my whole life. Good teachers have no idea how much they can impact a child and their future,” Laila reflects. Laila continued her secondary education where she was further encouraged by her French teacher, to participate in major art competitions. Laila’s dedication and talent were rewarded when she won first place in the Mary Glasgow Competition in 1992 and secured second place in the Arc-en-Ciel competition, competing against students from across Great Britain.
During her teens Laila and her family moved to South London, where she took part in school talent shows and began to put her focus into another creative field – songwriting and singing. “Creating was always in my blood whether it be painting, writing or singing. I was creating and that’s what I loved most” Laila reflects.

How it all Began
After taking a break from art, she reconnected with her passion during the 2020 coronavirus. “It was a difficult time for most people including myself and brought a surprising turn, when I began to paint again. I felt the immediate benefits on my mental health and wellbeing” says Laila. It was during this time that she started to invest in painting and was taking on commissions. “Thanks to this leap of faith, I am now in a position where I can work as a visual artist and realise my dreams” says Laila.
